BELLY OF THE BEAST tells Cuba’s untold stories. Through hard-hitting journalism and stunning cinematography we inform and inspire, opening eyes and hearts to a country with a unique past and a wide-open future.

There has been a dearth of impactful journalism and documentary filmmaking on Cuba and US-Cuba relations – until now. BELLY OF THE BEAST is filling this void, tackling crucial issues in innovative ways that have educated and energized a wide-ranging, largely young audience. Just as important, BELLY OF THE BEAST’s groundbreaking journalistic model is providing an inspiring example of what a media organization can and should be, not just in Cuba, but anywhere in the world.

With CID’s support, BELLY OF THE BEAST has produced and distributed documentaries on a range of subjects, including:

  • A six-part documentary series called The War on Cuba about the impact of sanctions on the Cuban people
  • Two groundbreaking investigative documentaries — Uphill on the Hill and Hardliner on the Hudson — in which Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández travels to Washington, D.C. and Union City, New Jersey, to expose the interests and politics driving the U.S. government’s policy toward Cuba
  • A documentary about the inspiring story of the first Cuban little league baseball team to play in the Little League World Series in the United States
  • A documentary called Teresita’s Dream about a Cuban scientist who, after her mother had Alzheimer’s, helped develop a potentially groundbreaking treatment for the disease.
  • A short documentary about a Palestinian student from Gaza who is studying medicine in Havana
Belly of the Beast is currently producing two other documentaries about Cuban health internationalism featuring Cuban medical missions in southern Italy and Guinea-Bissau.
