George Gmelch

George Gmelch is professor of anthropology at Union College and recently retired from the University of San Francisco. He was an under grad at Stanford and PhD at UCSB. He is a cultural anthropologist who studies sport cultures, migration, mobile workers, and tourism. He has done long term field research among Irish Travellers, English Gypsies, Alaskan natives, Caribbean villagers and return migrants in Ireland, Newfoundland and Barbados. The author of 15 books, he has also collaborated with Dennis Lanson on the film A YEAR IN THE FIELD, about the fieldwork of a young Estonia anthropologist in Newfoundland. He is the author of 15 books and has written widely for general audiences.
