Kapena  Liu

Kapena Liu is a filmmaker based in Mililani, Oahu. By blending his passion for film with his dedication to documenting Hawaiian language and stories, his work seeks to preserve voices and places that are often overlooked. He made his directorial debut in 2023 with his film Blue Fish, and has since gone on to work alongside Ka Alala, a social media platform that offers free educational Hawaiian language resources to the public. In 2024, Kapena was selected as a Sundance Institute Indigenous Program Fellow for his upcoming film, Olelo Kupuna: Passing in Silence.
