Rafael Roy

Rafael Roy is a Filipino American filmmaker and cinematographer whose work explores community, cultural identity, and the relationship between people and place. His credits include the Academy Award–nominated I Am Ready, Warden, HBO’s Eyes on the Prize III, the Sundance-premiering American Doctor, and PBS FRONTLINE’s Alaska’s Vanishing Native Villages, which received a Primetime Emmy nomination. In Alaska, Roy documented how climate change is reshaping Yup’ik and Cup’ik subsistence practices and relationships to land, water, and food.

Based in New York’s Catskill Mountains, Roy is increasingly interested in foodways as a lens for migration, memory, labor, and belonging. He also cooks Filipino food and works with local farmers and food justice organizations, experiences that directly inform Living Culture. He is a co-founder of All Solid Things.
