Sally Kaplan

Sally partnered with David Vassar to form Backcountry Pictures in 2001.  “The Story Begins at the End of the Road’ is the motto for their production company which excels in making award-winning films and videos that celebrate the wonder and beauty of nature. As a team, Sally and David produced DISCOVER HETCH HETCHY (2006), an award-winning film hosted and narrated by Harrison Ford for the restoration of Hetch Hetchy in the Yosemite Valley; GRAND TETON VIDEO RIVERS (2006), the installation film for Grand Teton National Park’s visitor center; PERSPECTIVES FROM THE PEAKS, a short video which is also exhibited in Grand Teton National Park’s visitor center; CALIFORNIA FOREVER a two-part PBS Special which ran nationally on public television (2012-2016), EXQUISITE WASTELAND, a documentary in early production about the desert Southwest, and REFUGE (2016-2022) which served the successful campaign to prevent the military from expanding into Nevada’s Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Sally has also worked as producer/writer for Outdoor Life Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Travel Channel, Lifetime Television, Veria TV, and others. Her original short films have received honors and selection for screening at film festivals. GREEN RECKONING, a feature documentary currently in production, questions National Parks as ‘America’s Best Idea.’
