Nearly two decades after the death of her grandmother, an artist travels to her grandparents’ house in Jacksonville, Florida to construct an atlas of family emotion. As she maps the landscape and architecture through field studies, interviews, home movies, photographs, and letters, the once stable narratives of her family’s American Dream shift. Confronted by gaps in the family archive, she increasingly turns to Florida’s swampy flora and fauna for psychic reprieve.
Part essay-film, part auto-fiction, Florida & Its Discontents draws upon documentary strategies such as re-enactment, voice over narration, stop motion animation, and collage to critically engage with place, history, and affect. Shot in 16mm, this project endeavors a singular psycho-geography that is both poetic and critiques images of nostalgia by rendering them embodied and material.
This project is in the development stage. It will be shot and produced incrementally so that each part can be shown separately as a short or as a single channel feature once all are complete.
