Latin Clowns Evolution chronicles the parallel stories of a group of Latine clowns as they gather for their annual Congreso in South Los Angeles – a weeklong event filled with seminars and performances to help teach the 100+ attendees the multifaceted art of clowning. The clowns’ emphasis on joy and optimism is powerfully juxtaposed with their personal journeys of sacrifice and resilience in having immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico and Central America, leaving all they knew behind.
As the Congreso unfolds, the film details the clowns’ backstories, who collectively make space for one another in a country that doesn’t necessarily make room for them. Through lots of laughing and occasional tears, the clowns become closer all while learning new tricks, comedy routines, make-up application techniques, and much more. This feature documentary is a moving testament to the healing power of the arts, community, and finding acceptance and belonging through chosen family.
