Ready, Rudy? tells the story of Rudy Van Gelder, an eye doctor from New Jersey turned recording engineer who became the architect of modern jazz. It is a film about the act of recording; what happened in the room, the architecture of sacred spaces, and what it means to step inside them. From a suburban living room in Hackensack, and later a cathedral‑like sanctuary in Englewood Cliffs, he recorded the sounds that defined modern jazz: A Love Supreme, Blue Train, Maiden Voyage, Somethin’ Else and countless others. Yet the man who made it all possible remains largely unknown.

Ultimately, the film explores what it means to listen. When Miles Davis asks, “Ready, Rudy?” he is not asking whether the tape is rolling, he is asking whether someone is out there listening. Are we ready to listen too?
