With sensitivity and wit, this film explores whether those getting the birth control device known as the IUD (Intrauterine Device) are duped into expecting it not to hurt, and systematically denied pain relief for a procedure that, while officially termed “uncomfortable,” may be “as excruciating as childbirth,” depending on whom you ask.

“The Empress’ New IUD” highlights compassionate and humorous discussions with a diverse group of individuals who have gotten IUDs, and addresses the “Gender Pain Gap,” in which female pain is medically and societally minimized and under-researched.

The film features interviews with medical ethicists to discuss the obvious – why pain matters. We follow young people considering getting an IUD, and witness the processes they’re subject to. We talk to medical providers who not only insert IUDs, but who have also gotten the procedure themselves, illuminating the cycle of pain. Ultimately, this film addresses the historical and global normalization of female pain, encouraging personal advocacy and system-wide change, starting with the IUD.
